The source of the Kupa river<\/strong> is nothing short of a hydrological and landscape phenomenon, and its beauty and wild nature leave a strong, lasting impression on every visitor. The source is located within the boundaries of the Risnjak National Park, nestled 100 metres below tall, vertical rocks. It is around 200 metres long and 50 metres wide, and has the appearance of a small, oval lake. The surface water is calm, clear and greenish in colour, sitting at an altitude of 321 metres above sea level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Kupa river emerges from a still unknown depth. However, the water was found to spring out of two separate channels resembling vertical wells. Although a depth of over 80 metres<\/strong>was measured in the deeper and narrower channel, while the wider channel was found to be 57 metres deep, the total depth of the Kupa river source remains unknown due to the low and constant water temperature ranging from 5 to 6 \u00b0C,<\/strong> making it impossible to dive into the deep waters. However, water colouring found an underwater connection between the Malenca sinkhole, as well as the Velika Voda stream sinkhole by Crni Lug, and the Kupa river. The water outflow capacity is approximately <\/strong>1200 l\/s<\/strong>,while maximum water quantities cannot be measured.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The easiest way to the Kupa river source is down a marked hiking trail from the village of Razloge, where you will find the information desk of the Risnjak National Park.<\/strong> The pleasant stroll through the beach forest takes approximately 30 minutes, and requires a bit more caution in the steep sections, to avoid slipping on wet leaves. The administration of the National Park set up a wooden fence and constructed a walkway in the more exposed parts. In the lower area, right by the source, the trail takes you through the dry river bed of the Kra\u0161i\u0107evica stream, which becomes impassable in heavy precipitation as the stream gets flooded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The source can also be accessed from the opposite side of the Kupa river, from the direction of Kupari<\/strong> or from the village of Hrvatsko<\/strong>, where \u010cabranka flows into Kupa. This trail is a bit longer (5 kilometres), but not demanding thanks to its configuration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Tr\u0161\u0107e\u2013Crni Lug section is the highest one of the Cycling Trail of Gorski Kotar, taking you through the most forested areas of Gorski Kotar. Riding down this section, the only sounds to reach you \u2013 apart from wheels turning on gravel \u2013 will be birdsong and the sound of the wind. Immerse yourself in the rich scents of forest plants and visit a few unique viewpoints which can be reached on bicycle. A visit to the mountain lodges of the section will reward you with an authentic atmosphere of Gorski Kotar\u2019s unparalleled forests. The end of the section takes you to the Risnjak massif with its rich flora and fauna. The main entrance to the Risnjak National Park is located in Crni Lug.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Starting from Tr\u0161\u0107e, take the scenic serpentine roads downhill to Smre\u010dje and Mali Lug, where you can enjoy the view of the grandiose forests of Gorski Kotar. Make sure to stop by the towering statue of Petar Klepac, a legendary giant with supernatural powers and a symbol of the strength of the people of Gorski Kotar. Once in Mali Lug, turn left and take the road leading to Zamost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At around the 10-kilometre mark, a branch of the road will take you to the village of Kupari \u2013 the point of origin of the Kupa river source. Visit the Birth House of the River Kupa Interpretation Centre, which educates its guests on the rich biodiversity of the Kupa river. Once in Kupari, make your way across the Kupa river, and keep cycling along its right bank to the village of Hrvatsko, then upstream along the \u010cabranka river. In Zamost, you can take a break by the old mill and sawmill, preserved in their original state, and in \u010cabar, you can visit the 17th-century Zrinski Castle. Fuel your body with cheese and herbal juices at the Pintar family farm, which will give you enough strength to make it through the final 10 kilometres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
