The Lokvarka<\/em> cave is the largest cave in Gorski Kotar. It measures 1200 metres in length and 140 metres in height from the highest to the lowest point of its explored area, making it one of the largest caves in Croatia adapted for tourist visits. The entrance to the cave was discovered by accident, in 1911, during the quarrying of stone in a small quarry. That same year, the cave was visited and researched by Dr Josip Poljak, and the following year, paths and wooden bridges and fences were set up throughout the cave to make it suitable for tourist visits. Paths leading through the cave were first renovated in 1935, and then again in 1961 and 1974 to replace the wooden bridges with iron bridges, and electric lighting was also added. The cave underwent its fourth round of renovations in 2012.<\/p>\n

Adapted and lit paths and stairs can be used to access a few different galleries, all the way down to the underground lake. The cave is naturally divided into four galleries with numerous stone decorations. Three of them are open for visitors, while the fourth \u2013 the latest to be discovered \u2013 was preserved in its original state. The cave temperature measures at around 8\u00a0\u00b0C year-round, and the flora and fauna remain partly unexplored. The cave boasts stunning deposits, especially flowstones, as well as an endemic fauna, among which the most famous are the subterranean spider Parastalita stygia<\/em>, the millipede Brachydesmus inferus inferus<\/em>, subterranean beetles Thyphlotrechus<\/em> bilimeki<\/em> and Parapropus sericeus stilleri<\/em>, the subterranean leech and others.<\/p>\n\n\n

You will also have the opportunity to learn about the 200-year-old Louisiana road connecting Rijeka and Karlovac. The Vrelo cave and the Lokvarka cave, both open for tourists, will enchant you with their rich underground world. Also, make sure to stop by Mrkopalj, a village dating back to the late 15th century, which experienced a real boom with the construction of the Caroline road. Mrkopalj is also known as the \u201cCradle of Croatian Skiing\u201d, seeing as the first ski course in Croatia was organised here in 1913. Starting from the centre of Lokve, the trail takes you toward the Sopa\u010d area, stopping by the Lokvarka cave \u2013 the second largest cave in Croatia, which can be explored up to a depth of 70 metres. The cave is decorated with all kinds of calcite formations spanning across several galleries. After exploring the underground, follow the trail up to Brestova Draga and the stone pillars, which are the ruins of a viaduct located on the historical Caroline road. From there on, the trail descends toward Slavica and Belo Selo, where you will want to take a break to visit the Mountain Garden on the Caroline road offering the juiciest blueberries, raspberries and strawberries. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Keep following the trail to the Roswell cowboy village which boasts buildings typical of a small Wild West town, such as a saloon and a sheriff\u2019s office.
