The Bajer lake is the oldest reservoir of the Fu\u017eine area, immensely rich in water. The lake records an annual rainfall of between 1500 and 2000 millimetres per square metre, and up to 4000 litres in the more extreme years. To keep and use such a vast amount of water, three reservoirs \u2013 Bajer, Lepenica and Potko\u0161 \u2013 were built in Fu\u017eine.<\/p>\n

Bajer was built in the 1950s with the construction of a dam right by the settlement of Fu\u017eine. Located in the once attractive Li\u010danka river valley, the Bajer lake has an average depth ranging from 2 to 7 metres and holds approximately one million cubic metres of water. It is suitable for boat, canoe and kayak rides, as well as sailing thanks to its frequent wind currents. An attractive six-kilometre-long promenade wraps around the Bajer lake, frequented by both hikers and cyclists. Apart from hiking and cycling, you can also take a tourist train or a horse-drawn carriage around the lake.<\/p>\n

The lake is swarming with fish, making it a real treat for anglers.<\/p>\n\n\n

After pedalling through vast forests, Gorski Kotar treats you to another one of its treasures \u2013 water. Having passed the Kupa river, the rest of the Crni Lug\u2013Fu\u017eine section could be nicknamed \u201cLakes of Gorski Kotar\u201d. Immediately after Crni Lug, in Mrzla Vodica, you will come across two lakes named Mrzlica and Lokvar. The Lokvar lake, also known as the Youth Lake, was created as a result of a dam construction in Lokve in 1954. It guards the original route of the Louisiana road, a state-of-the-art road of the time which connected Rijeka and Karlovac more than 200 years ago, but got flooded due to the accumulation of the Lokvar lake. After cycling uphill to witness the most beautiful view of Risnjak at Ravno Podolje, take the trail downhill to the Lepenica valley. Follow the Lepenica stream to the eponymous lake, which is connected to the Bajer lake in Fu\u017eine. You will also come across the Vrelo cave, hiding a small lake within, thus perfectly rounding off the experience of cycling along the Gorski Kotar lakes. The section ends in Fu\u017eine, a settlement sitting at 730 metres above sea level and surrounded by picturesque mountains, the serenity of centuries-old coniferous forests and gorgeous lakes. Cycling across Gorski Kotar is a treat for all senses. While riding your bicycle, enjoy the gorgeous views, scents of forest plants, birdsong and tastes of Gorski Kotar. The Fu\u017eine\u2013Delnice section is fully packed with these \u2013 from cycling by a field of mountain lavender and forest fruits to tasting the blueberry strudel, Gorski Kotar liqueurs, marmalades, teas and the \u201c\u0161kripavac\u201d cheese. You will also have the opportunity to learn about the 200-year-old Louisiana road connecting Rijeka and Karlovac. The Vrelo cave and the Lokvarka cave, both open for tourists, will enchant you with their rich underground world. Also, make sure to stop by Mrkopalj, a village dating back to the late 15th century, which experienced a real boom with the construction of the Caroline road. Mrkopalj is also known as the \u201cCradle of Croatian Skiing\u201d, seeing as the first ski course in Croatia was organised here in 1913. Ride along the right shore of the Bajer lake from the centre of Fu\u017eine to the Vrelo area, where you can visit the eponymous cave. At this point, turn right and take a gravel path through the shade of the woods and green glades, right up to Roswell \u2013 a cowboy village where the sequel to the German film Winnetou was shot. Once there, you can stop for a break and take a walk through the imaginary set. Your ride continues through the forest path to the Louisiana road in the Rogozno area. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

At this point, cross to the other side of the slope and cycle to the highest point of the route, sitting at 980 metres above sea level. Once at Gornje Jelenje, turn around and ride back to Fu\u017eine via the route stretching along the Vrelo ranch, the Lepenica stream and the Bajer lake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The trail takes you around the Bajer lake, with the dam in the centre of Fu\u017eine acting as both the starting point and the finish line. The trail starts at the main road and continues toward the \u010coka peninsula, then down the landscaped promenade along the Bajer lake and all the way to the Mala Li\u010danka pedestrian bridge (made by Petar Bari\u0161i\u0107). Riding along the Li\u010danka stream will take you to the village of Vrelo where you can visit the Vrelo cave, located only around 100 metres away. The trail then turns left toward the second Lepenica lake and, after crossing the Lepenica dam, descends back down to the Bajer lake along the Rakov Jarak Scout Centre. From there on, it goes along the gravel path back to the starting point at the dam. Open-air fitness equipment can be found along this side of the lake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The trail takes you from the centre of Fu\u017eine down the landscaped promenade along the Bajer lake and continues all the way to the village of Vrelo across the \u010coka peninsula. Once there, make sure to visit the Vrelo cave, located only around 100 metres from the trail. Further along, the route stretches down the county road, turning left after the Vrelo ranch and continuing down a gravel path underneath the A6 highway. This marks the start of a gentle uphill ride along the meadows, which later transforms into a steeper ascent through a forest toward Benkovac Fu\u017einski. Having crossed the main road connecting Fu\u017eine and Zlobin, you will continue cycling down an andesite quarry toward Li\u010d, along the Benkovac stream. (Please proceed with extra caution due to heavy machinery!)  From there on, the trail takes you through a tunnel below the railway track, then along the Forest Fairytale outing spot. The trail turns left ahead of the sawmill, leading back to the centre of Fu\u017eine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Starting from the centre of Fu\u017eine, the trail stretches along the main road toward Li\u010d, passing under the railway bridge and the Drvenja\u010da production plant on the way. A few hundred meters beyond the centre of Li\u010d, the trail turns left onto a gravel path through the Li\u010dko Polje field, all the way to the Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows. Further along, the gravel path leads back to the Li\u010dko Polje field, then turns right for an ascent toward Bitoraj. At the 12-kilometre mark, the trail connects to an asphalt forest path and turns left for descent toward the village of Vrata (please proceed with caution due to heavy forestry machinery!). Once in Vrata, keep following the gravel path across the highway and toward the Roswell cowboy village, but turn left and take the road descending toward the village of Vrelo at the 17-kilometre mark. Follow the trail along the Lepenica and Bajer lakes back to the centre of Fu\u017eine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
