At the mere mention of the Devil\u2019s Passage,<\/em> known in Croatian as \u201cVra\u017eji prolaz\u201d,<\/em> we are reminded of one of the circles of hell described in the Divine Comedy<\/em> by renowned Renaissance writer Dante Alighieri. In fact, one would not be faulted for thinking that this narrow gorge underneath Skrad, measuring around 800 metres in length and 2 metres in width, was the direct inspiration for the world-famous work. However, Dante lived around 500 years before the first historical record of the area of \u201cZeleni vir\u201d (Green Vortex), where the Devil\u2019s Passage is located, appeared in 1884 and described the spot as an outing for only the bravest of explorers.<\/p>\n

The Devil\u2019s Passage is often considered as one of the most beautiful sceneries in Croatia. The Jasle stream forces its way through the narrow canyon, having eroded its stone over thousands of years to create a passage whose strong water and wild, steep rocks are beyond compare. Above it, propped on metal brackets cut into the stone, sit short bridges and stairs allowing passage. The canyon entrance is located by the mountain lodge named after the Green Vortex spring, which was declared a protected reserve of natural values in 1962. The Green Vortex Mountain Lodge is just one of a total of 16 mountain lodges in Gorski Kotar, but it is decidedly the lowest one, sitting at only 230 metres above sea level. Approximately 20 metres from the lodge, you will find the Skrad \u201cmunjara\u201d<\/em> \u2013 a hydro power plant dating back to 1922, whose construction kicked off the project of electrification of Gorski Kotar, as well as parts of the Croatian Littoral.<\/p>\n

Above the plant sits the Green Vortex, an impressive spring located at the bottom of a shallow, spacious cave, whose entrance is framed by 70-metre-high looming steep rocks, down which flows an animated cascade in the form of shiny water curtains. The Green Vortex was named after the greenish colour of the small lake which forms within its cave. Other caves can also be found in the area, among which the unique Mu\u017eeva Hi\u017eica cave, which sits above the plateau found at the edge of the Devil\u2019s Passage. According to folk tradition, during Ottoman invasion (around 1525), some locals from the area found their refuge in Mu\u017eeva Hi\u017eica. The leader of this group was a man, hence the name \u201cMu\u017eeva Hi\u017eica\u201d<\/em>, meaning \u201cMan\u2019s House\u201d. The cave is very spacious, measuring around two hundred metres in length. It is rich in deposits and at its edge, parts of which remain unexplored, sits a small lake. Some sources cite that the olm was discovered in the Mu\u017eeva Hi\u017eica cave at the same time as in the Postojna Cave.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"

A section of Gorski kotar\u2019s Cycling Trail from Delnice to Skrad will provide you with a possibility to truly experience Gorski kotar \u2013 combining rises and falls through its colorful woodland vegetation. You will start from Delnice, pass through the slopes of Petehovac to Karolina Road, the oldest road in Croatia, connecting hinterland with the sea. Karolina Road will lead you through a region where the famous gastronomic event \u2013 \u201ePlodovi gorja\u201c (Fruits of the mountain) \u2013 takes place, then will continue along picturesque hamlets of Ravna Gora and Skrad and finally reach a destination that before was visited only by braver hikers. Follow the trail down the Dobra river valley, a treasure trove of Gorski Kotar\u2019s many hidden gems. Keep cycling from Vrbovsko through vast beech forest expanses \u2013 the border separating the Croatian mountain region from continental Croatia. This attractive and dynamic trail circling the protected landscape of Zeleni Vir (Green Vortex) and Vra\u017eji Prolaz (Devil\u2019s Passage) starts you off on the Louisiana road from Skrad to Kupjak. Having reached the mountain lodge in \u0160ubetov Most, turn right into the forest and cycle down the route of the railway track to Kupjak. From there on, descend to I\u0161evnica, a hamlet on the Kupica river that will win you over with its clear water and rapids. The final 6 kilometres are a ride uphill on an asphalt road through the hamlets of Zakrajc, Gorica and Planina back to Skrad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Skrad is a village with the most beautiful view of the Kupa river valley, the surrounding peaks stretching to the Alps, and wherever the road takes you from the centre of Skrad, you will meet inclines and fun downhill rides. Therefore, this trail will also reward you with a long descent through the hamlets of Gorica, Rasohe and Ravan, all the way to the village of \u010cedanj in the Kupa river valley. Enjoy its mild climate at only 200 metres above sea level as you cycle upstream the tame landscapes of the Kupa river. In Brod na Kupi, your senses will be overwhelmed by the smell of delicious sweet rolls and buns from the local bakery, and the permanent exhibition of the Zrinski Castle is also a must-visit. Then, continue cycling along the Kupica river and the Curak stream, all the way to the protected landscape of Zeleni Vir. Exercise caution on the trail along the Curak stream, as frequent torrents cause changes to the terrain. In these spots, it is best to push your bike forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Take a break and enjoy this gem \u2013 one of the most beautiful Croatian canyons with its astonishing rapid flows and inhospitable steep rocks. The final 3.5 kilometres lead you uphill to Skrad, where you can reminisce on the whole experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
