The Mihel\u010di\u0107 family mill, better known as the Popovi\u0107 mill<\/em> has stood on the main and oldest Delnice street for more than 85 years. The construction of the mill began in 1924, when Josip and Francika Mihel\u010di\u0107 returned to their home region after years of working in the US. The mill was built for almost a year by two craftsmen from Austria, assisted by a few locals. The facility was fitted with parts of the mill made by the company Ganz Danubius<\/em> from Budapest, and once finished, it represented the first facility in Delnice operating on electricity from the small hydro power plant in the Zeleni Vir (Green Vortex) spring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fun fact: Delnice was not fully electrified with low-voltage current until November of 1927, which makes the mill and a few other commercial and industrial facilities in the Delnice area all the more significant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The services of the Popovi\u0107 mill were used not only by the Delnice locals, but people across the Gorski Kotar region. The mill operated with two milling lines, one using a stone mill, and the other (more modern one) using iron rolls. Today, both are found on the ground floor, while the attic contains sieving and product drying systems. All the equipment (mills, elevators, sieves, electric engine, leather belts used for power transmission to the machines, etc.) were preserved in their original form and can be toured, and their products can even be enjoyed today. In 1925, during the construction, a commercial building with a linen closet was also built by the mill. The area has since been renovated and today, it is used for art, music and bread baking workshops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A section of Gorski kotar\u2019s Cycling Trail from Delnice to Skrad will provide you with a possibility to truly experience Gorski kotar \u2013 combining rises and falls through its colorful woodland vegetation. You will start from Delnice, pass through the slopes of Petehovac to Karolina Road, the oldest road in Croatia, connecting hinterland with the sea. Karolina Road will lead you through a region where the famous gastronomic event \u2013 \u201ePlodovi gorja\u201c (Fruits of the mountain) \u2013 takes place, then will continue along picturesque hamlets of Ravna Gora and Skrad and finally reach a destination that before was visited only by braver hikers. The Fu\u017eine\u2013Delnice section is fully packed with these \u2013 from cycling by a field of mountain lavender and forest fruits to tasting the blueberry strudel, Gorski Kotar liqueurs, marmalades, teas and the \u201c\u0161kripavac\u201d cheese. You will also have the opportunity to learn about the 200-year-old Louisiana road connecting Rijeka and Karlovac. The Vrelo cave and the Lokvarka cave, both open for tourists, will enchant you with their rich underground world. Also, make sure to stop by Mrkopalj, a village dating back to the late 15th century, which experienced a real boom with the construction of the Caroline road. Mrkopalj is also known as the \u201cCradle of Croatian Skiing\u201d, seeing as the first ski course in Croatia was organised here in 1913. The trail starts from the Trg goranskih \u0161umara i drvara (Gorski Kotar Foresters\u2019 and Luggers\u2019 Square) and continues through the King Tomislav Park in the direction of Rijeka. On the outskirts of the town, take the cycling trail along the Louisiana road. Keep cycling from the village of Lu\u010dice to Lokve, taking the gravel path on the right after the 4-kilometre mark. The dynamic terrain with inclines and downhill sections will lead you to the main road to Crni Lug, which you will need to cross and follow the signposts to Praprot. Underneath the Drgomalj peak, take the trail back to the town, where we suggest you visit the electric Popovi\u0107 mill from 1924.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
