The Zrinski Castle is a monument par excellence. In 1651 in Brod na Kupi, Petar Zrinski built his palace, probably at the site of an earlier, 15th-century Frankopan castle. Due to more intense exploitation of natural resources, he transferred administration and judiciary from their earlier centres in Vinodol (Hreljin, Bribir, Ledenice) to Brod na Kupi. Today, the castle is a simple three-storey masonry structure with a hipped roof. It seems that in the beginning, the third floor was built from wood. On the ground floor, connected with Kupica and a nearby cavern through an underground tunnel, the original layout has been preserved, while the first and the second floor underwent reconstruction at a later date. This attractive and valuable building serves as both a fortification and an abode, making it a court-palace with special value. In terms of defence capabilities, the castle was equipped with loopholes on all fa\u00e7ades, with a box-machicolation on the last floor, which was a walled structure with an opening through which hot lead, oil and rocks were dropped on enemies trying to break through.<\/p>\n

Today, the Zrinski Castle hosts the \u201cWilderness with a Sea View\u201d permanent exhibition of the Natural History Museum and a Routes of the Frankopans Interpretation Centre, where you can find out more about the rich fauna of Gorski Kotar and the Frankopan family\u2019s history in the region.<\/p>\n\n\n

The Brod na Kupi\u2013Tr\u0161\u0107e section of the Cycling Trail of Gorski Kotar takes you upstream, along the upper flow of the Kupa river, whose preserved environment and biodiversity makes for a perfect home to more than 100 diurnal butterfly species. The entire Kupa river valley is often nicknamed the \u201cButterfly Valley\u201d for this very reason. The road will take you along the right bank of the Kupa river, through the picturesque hamlets of Ku\u017eelj, Ga\u0161parci and Turke, and the numerous rapids and beaches are perfect for taking a dip. The water-powered mill and sawmill in Zamost and the ethnological collection of the house of Pal\u010dava \u0160i\u0161a in Ple\u0161ce are also a must-visit. The development of this area is credited to Petar Zrinski, who had an iron smelting plant built in \u010cabar in 1651. The most famous structure in \u010cabar is the 16th-century Zrinski Castle, located only 700 metres from the \u010cabranka river source. A more demanding ascent awaits you on the way from \u010cabar to Tr\u0161\u0107e, but every metre crossed will be well worth the effort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This nearly 100-kilometre-long circular road route will leave everyone speechless, as it mostly runs along the Kupa river itself, as well as the \u010cabranka river. The scenic ascent from \u010cabar to the coldest village in Croatia in winter months \u2013 Parg \u2013 and the long descent down the serpentine section leading from Tr\u0161\u0107e to Gerovo will impress every cyclist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The last part of the route takes you for a ride along the very boundaries of the Risnjak National Park, then through Delnice \u2013 the highest inhabited town in Croatia \u2013 and the 12-kilometre-long descent toward the Kupa river valley is just the cherry on top. Explore the Butterfly Valley inhabited by more than 200 butterfly species and visit the \u201cWilderness with a Sea View\u201d permanent exhibition in the Zrinski Castle in Brod na Kupi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Find out fun facts about bears, wolves and lynx at the Large Carnivores Visitor Centre, followed by a descent to Vrbovsko, one of the oldest and most beautiful villages. Leave the Caroline road for an exploration of the historical Louisiana road from Vrbovsko to Brod Moravice, the area with the most places of worship and the oldest Gorski Kotar house \u2013 Dela\u010d House.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You will also like the descent to the Kupa river valley, where Queen Maria Theresa planned to build a waterway. Unfortunately, the plan never came to fruition. In Brod na Kupi, make sure to visit the Zrinski Castle with its permanent exhibition as part of the Rijeka Natural History Museum. After a ride through the Kupa river valley comes an ascent to Skrad and from there on, a ride down the Louisiana road to Kupjak. Skrad is a village with the most beautiful view of the Kupa river valley, the surrounding peaks stretching to the Alps, and wherever the road takes you from the centre of Skrad, you will meet inclines and fun downhill rides. Therefore, this trail will also reward you with a long descent through the hamlets of Gorica, Rasohe and Ravan, all the way to the village of \u010cedanj in the Kupa river valley. Enjoy its mild climate at only 200 metres above sea level as you cycle upstream the tame landscapes of the Kupa river. In Brod na Kupi, your senses will be overwhelmed by the smell of delicious sweet rolls and buns from the local bakery, and the permanent exhibition of the Zrinski Castle is also a must-visit. Then, continue cycling along the Kupica river and the Curak stream, all the way to the protected landscape of Zeleni Vir. Exercise caution on the trail along the Curak stream, as frequent torrents cause changes to the terrain. In these spots, it is best to push your bike forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Take a break and enjoy this gem \u2013 one of the most beautiful Croatian canyons with its astonishing rapid flows and inhospitable steep rocks. The final 3.5 kilometres lead you uphill to Skrad, where you can reminisce on the whole experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
