Na dijelu prvotne trase Karolinske ceste, danas \u0161umske ceste izme\u0111u Brestove Drage i sela Slavica, nalazi se 13 krnjih piramida, gra\u0111enih od velikih kamenih blokova. Svaka je \u0161iroka i duga\u010dka oko 7 metara te isto toliko visoka. To su fajeri (od njem. pfeiler<\/em>=stup), koji su slu\u017eili kao upornjaci strmom vijaduktu (s drvenim podom i ogradom), koji je premo\u0161\u0107ivao dolinu. Naime graditelj Karolinske ceste Antun Matija Weiss na jedinstven je, ali i neuobi\u010dajen na\u010din premostio udolinu \u2013 umjesto da cestu gradi okolnim, ne\u0161to duljim putem i na taj na\u010din zaobi\u0111e depresiju, izgradio je vijadukt s prili\u010dnim usponom.<\/p>\n

Prema zapisanim podacima jedne zime krajem 18. stolje\u0107a te\u0161ka je ko\u010dija s \u010detiri konja i dosta putnika na zale\u0111enom vijaduktu po\u010dela klizati i probiv\u0161i ogradu pala na tlo, a svi putnici i konji ostali su na mjestu mrtvi. Saznav\u0161i za to, graditelj Weiss tada si je oduzeo \u017eivot. Nakon toga izgra\u0111ena je okolna cesta, drveni su dijelovi vijadukta istrunuli, a fajeri jo\u0161 uvijek stoje kao simbol jednog rijetkog, nevi\u0111enog i neuspje\u0161nog arhitektonskog rje\u0161enja.<\/p>\n

On a section of the original Caroline road forming today\u2019s forest road between Brestova Draga and the village of Slavica, 13 truncated pyramids built from large stone blocks can be found. Each one measures approximately seven metres in width, length and height. Locals call them \u201cfajeri\u201d (from German pfeiler<\/em>, meaning \u201cpillar\u201d), and they once served as abutments of a steep viaduct (with a wooden deck and fence) bridging the valley. Antun Matija Weiss, the architect of the Caroline road, solved the issue of the valley in a unique way \u2013 instead of making the road take a somewhat longer way round, which would circumvent the depression, he built this considerably tall viaduct.<\/p>\n

According to written records, one late-18th century winter, a heavy carriage pulled by four horses and carrying a great number of passengers began sliding across the frozen viaduct and fell to the ground after breaking the fence, instantly leaving all passengers and horses dead. Once Weiss found out about the accident, he took his own life. Afterwards, a surrounding road was built, leaving the wooden parts of the viaduct to rot. Its stone pillars stand as a reminder of a unique, but ultimately failed architectural solution.<\/p>\n\n\n

Starting from the village of Vrata, the trail continues below the Plasa viewpoint. For the first 2.5 kilometres, it takes you uphill via an asphalt road, after which a right turn lands you on a gravel path, which continues through a forest to the village of Donja Slavica. The trail passes underneath the Velika Slavica peak, which can be reached by following a short hiking trail. At the end of the gravel path, by the water reservoir, the trail turns left onto the old Caroline road leading to the village of Donja Slavica and, further along, toward the village of Vrata. If you are willing and able, you can keep cycling until the route takes you to the stone ruins of the village of Gornja Slavica and the stone pillar ruins of the old bridge across the Caroline road. In that case, you will need to turn right by the water reservoir and ride about two kilometres to reach the site. When returning to Vrata, take the gravel path by the Educational Mountain Garden, which follows the pipeline route back to the starting point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The trail is moderately demanding, with a long, moderately demanding ascent at the start and a rather steep decline at the village of Donja Slavica.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Starting from the centre of Lokve, the trail takes you toward the Sopa\u010d area, stopping by the Lokvarka cave \u2013 the second largest cave in Croatia, which can be explored up to a depth of 70 metres. The cave is decorated with all kinds of calcite formations spanning across several galleries. After exploring the underground, follow the trail up to Brestova Draga and the stone pillars, which are the ruins of a viaduct located on the historical Caroline road. From there on, the trail descends toward Slavica and Belo Selo, where you will want to take a break to visit the Mountain Garden on the Caroline road offering the juiciest blueberries, raspberries and strawberries. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Keep following the trail to the Roswell cowboy village which boasts buildings typical of a small Wild West town, such as a saloon and a sheriff\u2019s office.
