One site that showcases most of the key features of the Gorski Kotar tourist offer is, without a doubt, the Risnjak National Park. The area of the Risnjak massif was declared a national park in 1953.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thanks to its remarkably diverse climate, geological, petrographical and other factors, the area boasts an equally diverse flora and fauna. Still, the main phenomenon of the Park are its forests. With the return of the lynx to the forests of Risnjak, the three large carnivores (the wolf, the bear and the lynx) have been reunited in one place. The Risnjak massif with its white rocks looms over the greenery of the Gorski Kotar forests. Gorgeous views from an altitude of 1528 metres above sea level, overlooking the Kvarner Bay, Istria and the Julian Alps in neighbouring Slovenia, will leave every visitor speechless.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the foot of the Veliki Risnjak peak itself sits the J. Schlosser Klekovski Mountain Lodge. The rocky Snje\u017enik peak surrounded by mountain meadows will pleasantly surprise you with its accessible and picturesque landscape. The flora of this mountain area is adapted to the harshest weather, easily withstanding the summer heat, the intense cold and the bora wind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When visiting the Risnjak National Park, make sure to take a walk down the Leska Educational Trail, one of the first such trails in Croatia. Leska was first opened on 4 June 1993 and it has been renovated twice. The trail is easily accessed from Crni Lug, with its starting point sitting a few minutes on foot west of the Park\u2019s administration building. It was designed and constructed in a way that allows every visitor an unguided visit. A total of 23 information boards, scattered along this short 4.2-kilometre trail, are a great source of knowledge about the natural and cultural heritage of the National Park. You can walk the Leska Educational Trail by yourself or in the company of an expert guide, and it can also be traversed on a bicycle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Starting from the centre of Lokve, the trail continues to Lazac Lokvarski and passes through the Mali Aerodrom (\u201csmall airport\u201d) area on the way to the road connecting Delnice and Crni Lug. At this point, turn left to reach Crni Lug \u2013 a scenic village surrounded by green meadows and a dark coniferous forest after which the village was named. Having passed through the village and followed the trail to the Risnjak National Park administration building in Bijela Vodica, take the uphill road above Leska to reach the Pjetli\u0107 peak, which then turns into a descent toward Zelin Mrzlovodi\u010dki. This is followed by an asphalt section leading you to the finish line through the Gorski Raj (Mountain Paradise) area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Starting from Crni Lug, this trail leads you toward Bijela Vodica and the main entrance of the Risnjak National Park. On a surface area of only 6.4 hectares, you will come across rich flora and fauna. The trail climbs uphill via the road above Leska, reaching almost 1000 metres above sea level. Cycling through the dense and lush greenery of Gorski Kotar forests is a remarkably rewarding experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Afterwards, the trail takes you on around a 4-kilometre ride on the main road to Prezid. After reaching the \u017deljezna Vrata ruins area, turn onto the gravel path descending to the villages of Kra\u0161i\u0107evica, Razlo\u0161ki Okrug and Biljevina (located near the source of the Kupa river). The only part left is a gentle ascent to Malo Selo and the return to Crni Lug.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The starting point of the trail is the village of Bijela Vodica, where the Risnjak National Park administration building and lodge are located. Further along, the trail takes you for a ride across picturesque hilltop villages of Crni Lug and Malo Selo, and on the way there, you can enjoy the views of the Malenica and the Ple\u0161evka hill. Having crossed the 3.5-kilometre mark, turn right onto a forest road which will take you uphill to the Praprot peak. The ascent is followed by a long descent to the Kupa river, along which you will continue to the village of Hrvatsko. From there on, cycle uphill to the village of Razloge, near the Kupa river source. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the outskirts of the village, make sure to visit the Gorski Kotar House of Knowledge Interpretation Centre, which tells the story of \u201c\u0161indra\u201d, a construction material characteristic of Gorski Kotar, and the Gorski Kotar architectural heritage. At the very end of the ascent, take the road you started on back toward Bijela Vodica, where you can treat yourself to a well-deserved forest fruit strudel after a great ride.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
