In the 16th century, Ottoman attacks forced feudal lords \u2013 or, more precisely, Duke Juraj IV Zrinski \u2013 to build the Turanj defence observation tower in Moravice, today’s Brod Moravice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In its original form, the tower had four floors with loopholes and moveable wooden stairs, observation holes on the highest floor and a low hipped roof. Apart from personal weapons, guards also had a cannon at their disposal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
They used sound and smoke signals to alert surrounding fortresses and locals of Ottoman advances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In the 16th century, Turanj was transformed into a bell tower as part of the renovation of the Church of St Nicholas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The tower holds replicas of old weapons, copies of maps, documents and records on the history of Turanj and Brod Moravice.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"

Starting from Brod Moravice, follow the trail uphill to the village of Gornji Kuti, the cultural centre of the Brod Moravice area. Afterwards, cycle downhill through the villages of Maklen and Moravi\u010dka Sela, and after the village of Klepe\u0107e Selo, turn left to Podgorani. The inhabitants of these sparsely populated villages will happily greet you, and you might also catch a whiff of an excellent homemade apple tart on your ride. The villages are representative of valuable folk construction and form an ethnological whole. From there on, the trail takes you downhill through Kocijani to the main road coming from the direction of Brod na Kupi, from where an asphalt road will take you back to Brod Moravice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Brod Moravice boasts an impressive 13 places of worship, with the oldest being the Church of St Nicholas in Brod Moravice, with a door inscription dating it to 1431. The Turanj Tower, whose construction was ordered by a Zrinski duke in the 16th century as defence against the Ottoman Turks, can be found by the church.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Starting from Brod Moravice, the trail takes you to the village of Dela\u010di and its ethnological monument protected by the Ministry of Culture \u2013 the Dela\u010d House, dating from 1644. In the house, you can see valuable ethnological and ethnographic displays. After around 3 kilometres, you will take an asphalt road to the right, leading to the ethno village of \u0160imatovo. Once there, you will again turn right, to a branching road toward the hamlet of Zavrh, which will lead you to the Obrh viewpoint and source, from where you will enjoy the views of the Kupa river canyon and the Slovenian hamlet of \u017dlebe. Then, return to \u0160imatovo and keep cycling to another viewpoint with a magnificent view of the neighbouring Slovenia and the Kupa river valley \u2013 the Kavranova Stijena viewpoint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On your way back, cycle gently uphill through Klepe\u0107e Selo toward Moravi\u010dka Sela and back to Brod Moravice, an area famous their brandies made from autumnal fruits, among which the \u201cbrinjevica\u201d juniper brandy is renowned for its healing properties. On your route, you will cycle by a tall rock pillar known as \u201cpiljdak\u201d, which was used to alert the local population of incoming attacks by Ottoman Turks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
