The castle (manor house) of Petar Zrinski, dating back to 1651, commands the \u010cabar town centre. It is made up of four buildings encircling a central court and two towers interconnected through a fortification wall. Rumour has it that there is a secret tunnel connecting the ground floor of the castle with the Tropetarska Stijena peak atop of \u010cabar, providing an escape route in the event of danger. No record of such a tunnel exists, apart from testimonies of the \u010cabar elderly who, before the entrance was walled off for safety, used to find old weapons and human bones in the tunnel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
To this day, a part of the original walls, tower and vaults on the ground floor of the central building have been preserved. The castle houses a historical and ethnological collection, a gallery of artwork by Vilim Sve\u010dnjak and a Routes of the Frankopans Interpretation Centre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Starting from Tr\u0161\u0107e, take the scenic serpentine roads downhill to Smre\u010dje and Mali Lug, where you can enjoy the view of the grandiose forests of Gorski Kotar. Make sure to stop by the towering statue of Petar Klepac, a legendary giant with supernatural powers and a symbol of the strength of the people of Gorski Kotar. Once in Mali Lug, turn left and take the road leading to Zamost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At around the 10-kilometre mark, a branch of the road will take you to the village of Kupari \u2013 the point of origin of the Kupa river source. Visit the Birth House of the River Kupa Interpretation Centre, which educates its guests on the rich biodiversity of the Kupa river. Once in Kupari, make your way across the Kupa river, and keep cycling along its right bank to the village of Hrvatsko, then upstream along the \u010cabranka river. In Zamost, you can take a break by the old mill and sawmill, preserved in their original state, and in \u010cabar, you can visit the 17th-century Zrinski Castle. Fuel your body with cheese and herbal juices at the Pintar family farm, which will give you enough strength to make it through the final 10 kilometres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
