The Stara Su\u0161ica Castle, built by the Frankopans, sits on a hill slope on the edge of a coniferous forest. Some sources state that the Frankopans commanded a town within Stara Su\u0161ica which remained unoccupied by the Ottomans. After a successful defence against the Ottomans in 1785, together with Ravna Gora, Stara Su\u0161ica was declared a privileged town of the Empire of Croatian-Hungarian King Joseph II. Today, a gilded monstrance from 1778 received as a gift from Empress Maria Theresa is kept in the Parish Church of St Theresa of Avila. The castle\u2019s modern history can be traced to the construction of the Caroline road in the early 18th century, which connected continental Croatia with the Croatian Littoral.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In the 19th century, the castle became the property of Count Laval Nugent and in 1890, it was bought by Feliks and Josip Neuberger \u2013 two merchants from Rijeka. The castle was restored in the Romantic style of the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It also includes a sacral monument \u2013 the Church of St Anthony of Padua.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Find out fun facts about bears, wolves and lynx at the Large Carnivores Visitor Centre, followed by a descent to Vrbovsko, one of the oldest and most beautiful villages. Leave the Caroline road for an exploration of the historical Louisiana road from Vrbovsko to Brod Moravice, the area with the most places of worship and the oldest Gorski Kotar house \u2013 Dela\u010d House.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
You will also like the descent to the Kupa river valley, where Queen Maria Theresa planned to build a waterway. Unfortunately, the plan never came to fruition. In Brod na Kupi, make sure to visit the Zrinski Castle with its permanent exhibition as part of the Rijeka Natural History Museum. After a ride through the Kupa river valley comes an ascent to Skrad and from there on, a ride down the Louisiana road to Kupjak. Starting from Ravna Gora, take the historical Caroline road for around 8.5 kilometres to the village of Jablan, from where you will turn right onto a gravel path ascending to Bijela Kosa. Sitting at a height of 1289 metres, Bijela Kosa is one of the numerous peaks located in the vast forested and uninhabited area of Velika Kapela, between Klek and Vrbovsko. Circle the Bijela Kosa peak on your ride up to 1086 metres above sea level, followed by a well-deserved descent across Begova Cisterna to Ravna Gora.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
