Historical & cultural attractionsStara Sušica Castle
The Stara Sušica Castle, built by the Frankopans, sits on a hill slope on the edge of a coniferous forest. Some sources state that the Frankopans commanded a town within Stara Sušica which remained unoccupied by the Ottomans. After a successful defence against the Ottomans in 1785, together with Ravna Gora, Stara Sušica was declared a privileged town of the Empire of Croatian-Hungarian King Joseph II. Today, a gilded monstrance from 1778 received as a gift from Empress Maria Theresa is kept in the Parish Church of St Theresa of Avila. The castle’s modern history can be traced to the construction of the Caroline road in the early 18th century, which connected continental Croatia with the Croatian Littoral.
In the 19th century, the castle became the property of Count Laval Nugent and in 1890, it was bought by Feliks and Josip Neuberger – two merchants from Rijeka. The castle was restored in the Romantic style of the time.
It also includes a sacral monument – the Church of St Anthony of Padua.
