Cycling Trail of Gorski Kotar stages

The Trail consists of 7 stages that will guide you all over Gorski Kotar region. Every stage is described in detail, attractions, accommodation, shortcuts…

Stage E1: Delnice – Skrad

A section of Gorski kotar’s Cycling Trail from Delnice to Skrad will provide you with a possibility to truly experience Gorski kotar – combining rises and falls through its colorful woodland vegetation. You will start from Delnice, pass through the slopes of Petehovac to Karolina Road, the oldest road in Croatia, connecting hinterland with the sea. Karolina Road will lead you through a region where the famous gastronomic event – „Plodovi gorja“ (Fruits of the mountain) – takes place, then will continue along picturesque hamlets of Ravna Gora and Skrad and finally reach a destination that before was visited only by braver hikers. Today it is an unavoidable point of all nature admirers.

Stage E2: Skrad – Severin na Kupi

The section from Skrad to Severin na Kupi can be easily named „Cycling from Dobra to Kupa River“. It is because from Skrad, where Dobra river emerges, you will start cycling over a hilly part of the left bank of the Dobra river to be able to enjoy numerous orchards and fragrances of seasonal fruits. Then will continue along the Dobra river’s valley where one of the still not completely discovered pearls of Gorski kotar is situated. From Vrbovsko, continue cycling through endless expanses of beech forests, a boundary dividing the Croatia lowland from its upland region.
At the end of this stage you will be hosted by the Kupa river and Zrinski and Frankopan Castle.

Stage E3: Severin na Kupi – Brod na Kupi

Your cycling adventure from Severin na Kupi to Brod na Kupi, villages whose names share the name of the Kupa river, begins at Ivan Goran Kovačić’s region. At the moment you reach Lukovdol, you will realize where Kovačić found inspiration to write his numerous works. You will finally understand that there is something in this region that encourages creativity, particularly in Plemenitaš, the place where were born some of the best artworks of Gorski kotar. It is very possible that such inspiration can also be found at Orlova stijena (Eagle Rock) that will leave you breathless – not just because an exhilarating climb but because of a stunning view over the Kupa river to whose banks you will descend passing through Brod na Kupi.

Stage E4: Brod na Kupi – Tršće

The mountain bike transversal from Brod na Kupi to Tršće takes you upstream of the Kupa River, where more than 100 species of butterflies live because of their exceptional ecological preservation and biodiversity. The entire Kupa Valley is often referred to as the Butterfly Valley.

Stage E5: Tršće – Crni Lug

Section from Tršće to Crni Lug is also the highest section of the cycling trail that will lead you through the most densely forested regions of Gorski Kotar. It is also the section along which the only sounds you’ll hear, beside the noise of your wheels going across the gravel road, are the melody-singing birds and wind roaring when passing through bushy tree branches. Enchanted by myriad of scents of wild herbs you will also enjoy in view that extends from several unique panoramic viewpoints reachable only in your 2-wheels transport mean. Hunting lodges situated along this section will enable you to experience a real atmosphere of Gorski kotar forests, that priceless treasure. In Crni Lug where this section ends, you will be hosted by „his excellence“ – rocky Risnjak with all flora and fauna of the National Park it is situated in.

Stage E6: Crni Lug – Fužine

After pedalling along the forest expanses, it is time to visit another treasury of Gorski kotar – waters. After the Kupa river, a section from Crni Lug to Fužine can be named a section of „Gorski kotar Lakes“. Immediately after Crni Lug, in Mrzla Vodica you will be greeted by two lakes – Mrzlica and Lokvarsko. After the ascent towards the most beautiful view to Risnjak at Ravno Podolje, you descend toward the Lepenica valley where, after riding along the Lepenica spring, you will reach another lake of the same name – Lepenica – connected to another one – Bajer Lake in Fužine. If we add the Vrilo cave inside which is hidden a small lake, then we get a complete cycling experience along Gorski kotar lakes.

Stage E7: Fužine – Delnice

Cycling through Gorski Kotar is a ride that wakes up all the senses – you will enjoy the beautiful panoramic viewpoints, wild herbs scents, birdsongs but even Gorski kotar’s mouth-watering delicacies. The Fužine – Delnice section offer you all the aforementioned – from the mountain lavender fields in Lič, over the educational mountain garden offering forest fruits in Bel Selo, Gorski kotar liqueurs, marmalades and teas in Lokve, Farmer’s cheese (Škripavac) in Mrkopalj and as the icing on the cake, the blueberry strudel in Delnice.
