Historical & cultural attractionsTuranj Tower
In the 16th century, Ottoman attacks forced feudal lords – or, more precisely, Duke Juraj IV Zrinski – to build the Turanj defence observation tower in Moravice, today’s Brod Moravice.
In its original form, the tower had four floors with loopholes and moveable wooden stairs, observation holes on the highest floor and a low hipped roof. Apart from personal weapons, guards also had a cannon at their disposal.
They used sound and smoke signals to alert surrounding fortresses and locals of Ottoman advances.
In the 16th century, Turanj was transformed into a bell tower as part of the renovation of the Church of St Nicholas.
The tower holds replicas of old weapons, copies of maps, documents and records on the history of Turanj and Brod Moravice.
